As every year, we the LUGBZ was once again right at the heart of the South Tyrol Free Software Conference (SFSCON). Since the very first edition back in 2001, our association has been part of this great event — which has now become the biggest gathering for open source enthusiasts in Italy.
And once again, it was all about free software, fresh ideas, and inspiring discussions — and of course, the highlight: the SFS Awards!
The SFS Awards honor individuals who have made outstanding contributions to free software — both regionally and across Europe.
This year, we celebrated two remarkable people whose work perfectly embodies the values of the open source movement.
SFS-Award 2025: Free “Jodeln” in the Fediverse!
The SFS Award 2025 went to Adrian Kuntner, founder and administrator of tyrol.social – the largest Fediverse instance in Tyrol and South Tyrol.
What started three years ago as a small experiment has grown into a vibrant, open, and decentralized platform for free communication. Instead of tweeting or tooting, users here are “yodeling” – in true Tyrolean style!
With his dedication, Adrian has shown that digital spaces can be independent, community-driven, and fair. A real alternative to the big social media platforms – and a great example of what free software can achieve.
Congratulations to Adrian for winning the SFS Award 2025!
EU SFS-Award 2025: A player that plays anything.
The European SFS Award 2025 was presented to none other than Jean-Baptiste Kempf, founder of VLC and president of the VideoLAN organization. Whether MP4, MOV or even ASCII – there’s simply no media player more famous (or more beloved) than “the Swiss army knife that can play anything you throw at it.”
For years, VLC has stood for accessibility, openness, and technical excellence.
Kempf was honored for his lifelong dedication to ensuring that billions of people around the world can freely access and enjoy media.
As the laudatio beautifully put it:
“Today, we are celebrating not only a brilliant developer, but also a leader, community builder, and ambassador for software freedom.”
A truly well-deserved recognition.
